Periscope is 2015 App of the Year

$

0

Periscope best of 2015Periscope has been named the App store Best of 2015 by Apple. The Best of 2015 list created by Apple was split into two categories. One was “Apps” and the other was “Games”. Periscope is at the top of the “Apps” list.

There doesn’t seem to be much information about exactly how Apple determined what should be on the list. If you view the list on iTunes, it says: “We debated. We argued. Everyone had favorites, but to make this list of 2015’s finest, there could be no doubts. What you see here made the cut – they’re the most visionary, inventive, and irresistible apps and games of the year.”

iTunes best of 2015

Periscope is definitely an app that caught the attention of Podcasters in 2015. Re/Code reported in April that CEO of Periscope, Dick Costolo, said at an earnings call that Periscope had added a million new users in the app’s first ten days on the market.

Twitter acquired Periscope in 2015, and gave it plenty of support. At around the same time, Twitter pushed Meerkat away by refusing to allow it to continue to access Twitter’s social graph.

By doing so, it prevented the Meerkat app from having the ability to automatically notify users when their friends were streaming. That made it harder for Periscope’s competition to gain a foothold on Twitter.

To me (and probably many other podcasters) the greatest thing about Periscope was their responsiveness to users. When it started, the only available option was to broadcast in portrait. Shawn and I made a couple of attempts to use Periscope to live broadcast our podcast, and found it impossible to fit us both on the screen. Later, after many had requested a landscape mode, Periscope introduced landscape to the app.

Libsyn logoLibsyn has released their new player. It has some new features that are different from the previous player. Libsyn has put together a main support article for those who have questions about the new player (or want to know more about it).

The main new updates are:

* The player is customizable. You can change the colors to match your podcast.

* You can now copy the embed code. Your listeners can copy it, too. This allows people to post that link on their site.

* It comes with a Player Playlist. This helps your listeners who like to binge listen to podcasts. The new player has all your episodes, one after the other.

* You can share the new player to Google + , Twitter, Facebook, Clammer, Pinterest and iTunes, Stitcher and Tunein plus your RSS.

* The new player has a download option. Listeners can now one-click download the media file.

What if you prefer the old player? That’s ok. Libsyn says you don’t have to update your player if you do not want to. You still have a choice of four types of players: Legacy, Standard, Standard Mini, and Custom.

Mixcloud Lets You Stream Your Podcasts

Mixcloud logoMixcloud is a streaming audio platform that focuses on DJ mixes, radio shows, and podcasts. Last month, Mixcloud gave users the ability to cast their track to Apple TV. Now, Mixcloud is rolling out support for Chromecast and Sonos devices. This will enable podcasters to stream their shows via Chromecast and Sonos.

The purpose of adding support for Chromecast and Sonos seems to be in the hopes that it will prevent users from defecting to other services that already support the devices. It is also to make Mixcloud seem more attractive to prospective users so people will choose Mixcloud over its competitors.

On the Mixcloud website, it states that users get unlimited uploads. They are free to upload as much content as they would like to. They can also listen to as much content as they would like.

Doing so is encouraged. Their Terms of Service state that users need to log in and listen to or upload a piece of audio content at least every six months. Those that fail to do so may have their account permanently disabled due to prolonged inactivity.

Podcasters that are using music, or other audio, that they did not create themselves should be aware that Mixcloud respects the intellectual property rights of others. You are allowed to upload “a collection of sound recordings that have been released to the public under the authority of the copyright owners of the sound recordings.”

Fan Appreciation Day Connects Podcasters and Fans

Fan Appreciation DayWant to do something special for the fans of your podcast? Get involved with Fan Appreciation Day! The very first Fan Appreciation Day will take place on January 3, 2016. It will begin at 10:30 in the morning.

Fan Appreciation Day is an unofficial day for podcasters to let their fans know they appreciate them in a casual meet-n-greet setting online. It is similar to what would happen at a podcast conference, where fans and podcasters can meet, mingle, and get to know each other a little bit better. But, instead of happening in a physical location, the whole thing will take place via Blab.

It doesn’t cost anything for podcasters to participate in Fan Appreciation Day. Just go to the website and fill in a short form. It requires your name, email address, and a link to your podcast website. Pick a time from a dropdown box that you will be available on Blab for a meet-n-greet.

Make sure to let your fans know about Fan Appreciation Day, and what time you will be on Blab. This could be a really fun opportunity to connect with fans who live far away from you – without requiring anyone to travel or pay to attend a conference or event.

Patreon Makes a Change for Better Transparency

Patreon LogoPatreon has made a change that clarifies how much creators are actually receiving. Those of you have a Patreon for your podcast may already be aware that the amount it showed you were getting per month wasn’t actually accurate. This may have led to some unnecessary confusion.

Previously, patrons would see the number Pateron said your podcast was making per month. It may have appeared that you had earned enough to have hit a milestone goal – when in reality, that simply wasn’t factual. The problem was that that Patreon was showing the amount of money your podcast earned per month – without taking into account fees and declined pledges.

As such, the situation could have placed some podcasters into the uncomfortable position of having their patrons expecting to receive whatever was offered for a milestone goal – before the podcaster had actually earned the money. It is easy to see why this was a problem.

new Patreon

Go have a look at Patreon, and you will see a change. There is now a little question mark that has appeared next to the phrase “per month”. Patrons can hover over the question mark to get more information. A small pop-up window says: “Estimated income per month, after removing fees and declined pledges. Click for more details”.

A slightly different pop-up is shown to the creator. “Don’t worry! This is your estimated income for this month, after removing fees and declined pledges. Actual pledge total available in your patreon manager. Click for more details.

That “click” will direct patrons to the Patreon Help Center and a post that is titled: “Why Is My Public Facing Dollar Amount Less Than The Amount That Is Pledged To Me?” This post explains the new change to creators and to patrons.

Overall, this change was made for better transparency. Every creator, every patron, every visitor to your Patreon page will see the adjusted dollar figure.

WBEZ will be at Podcast Movement 2016

Podcast Movement 2016 logoPodcast Movement 2016 will take place in Chicago. It seems very fitting that three of Chicago’s own WBEZ podcasts will be at this year’s Podcast Movement. They are the most recent additions to the lineup of speakers who will be part of the event.

Podcast Movement is the premier international gathering of podcasters. It happens in a different location each year. According to the Podcast Movement website, Chicago is one of the best podcast cities in the world. They feel that much of the credit for turning the city into one of the preeminent locations for podcasting can be given to WBEZ.

WBEZ has added a number of niche and pop-culture podcasts to their family of digital shows. This American Life leads the pack of the world’s most popular podcasts, drawing nearly 3.5 listens a month. WBEZ’s podcast umbrella also includes Sound Opinions, where WBEZ’s Rock Doctors hold court on everything musical, and Filmspotting, a unique film review show.

Podcast Movement 2016 has been slowly revealing the speakers and panelists that will be at the event. They are planning on having more than 100 of them. The exact schedule of when each will speak has yet to be released. What is clear is that Podcast Movement 2016 will take place on July 6-8, 2016.

Three WBEZ podcasts, and their hosts, have been added to the list of speakers. Shannon Cason is the host of Homemade Stories. He is a powerful voice in the storytelling front, and a Moth GrandSLAM winner. In the podcast, he lays out his life for the listener, blemishes and all. Some stories are insightful and true, and others are works of fiction.

Keith Ecker and Erin Kahoa are hosts of Pleasure Town. It is a serial podcast about the people who live in PleasureTown, Oklahoma, as told by a mix of eclectic residents. The podcast is a mix of old-time radio show and dark contemporary drama.

Tricia Bobeda and Greta Johnson are the hosts of Nerdette. It is a show where they talk to people about their obsessions, from science to science fiction, great lady nerds of history, to Beyonce. Their podcast can be summed up as: “It’s not about what you love. It’s about how much you love it.”

Podster is a New Magazine About Podcasting

$
0
0

PodsterPodster is a new digital magazine about podcasts and podcasters. It comes from Shelf Media. The very first issue has been released, and you can check it out for free. So, I did.

The first issue is a total of 53 pages. It felt like the right length as I was reading through it. The cover is eye catching and they used nice font for the name of the magazine. If Podster was sitting on the magazine rack at a Barnes & Noble, I’d probably pick it up and start flipping through it.

Of course, I rarely find myself at a Barnes & Noble nowadays, so its good that Podster is a digital magazine. If it were print-only, it would be much less likely that I’d have heard of it or that I’d make the effort to go out into the world to find a paper copy of it. (As far as I can tell, this magazine is digital-only and doesn’t exist in print.)

It stands to reason that a magazine about podcasting is presented in digital format. After all, once you get involved in creating and producing one or more podcasts on a regular basis, posting the show notes for each episode, and sharing links to it on social media – the internet becomes your neighborhood.

I found the content of the magazine to be interesting, well written, and incredibly relevant for podcast creators as well as podcast listeners. The January 2016 issue includes interviews with Alex Goldman from Reply All, Gretchen Rubin from Happier with Gretchen Rubin, and Elaine McMillion Sheldon and Sarah Ginsburg from She Does. Each interview includes easy to spot links you can click on to hear one of their episodes. Alongside the interview is a list and brief description of the podcasts that the interviewee listens to.

There is a section where an excerpt of an individual podcast episode has been transcribed (with permission from the podcaster, I’d assume). Again, there are links that take you directly to whatever podcast caught your attention. No need to “Google it”! There is also plenty to enjoy of other content that I haven’t described here.

I could not help but notice that this first issue of Podster is rather ad heavy. To my surprise, I was not annoyed by the ads because all of them were very relevant to podcasting. As a result, I was shown ads that were actually interesting to me. I hope Podster keeps that up. Overall, I liked Podster well enough to subscribe to it and am looking forward to see what comes next.

Night Vale Creators Start Podcast Platform

Welcome to Night Vale book coverThe popular Welcome to Night Vale podcast is a fiction podcast that consists of dispatches from a surreal Southwestern town where creepy, unexplained, things are happening. The show has tons of fans, many of who have been inspired to create art based on the characters in the podcast. Now, the creators of Night Vale are branching out with their own podcast platform.

Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor are the people who created “Welcome to Night Vale”. They are starting their very own podcast platform called Night Vale Presents. The first podcast on the platform is called “Alice Isn’t Dead”, which is written by Joseph Fink.

“Alice Isn’t Dead” is another fiction based podcast. The show is about a truck driver who travels the United States in search of her wife. The idea appears to have been inspired by Joseph Fink’s experiences as he travels across the United States doing live editions of “Night Vale”.

The Night Vale Tumblr has further details. “Alice Isn’t Dead” is written and produced by Joseph Fink, but is preformed by Jasika Nicole (who played a major character in “Welcome To Night Vale”). “Alice Isn’t Dead” will have a completely new original score for each episode, written by disparition (who did the music for “Welcome to Night Vale”.)

The story in “Alice Isn’t Dead” is said to be darker than the story was in “Welcome to Night Vale”. The two podcasts are not related to or connected to each other. The first season of “Alice Isn’t Dead” will have 10 episodes and begin being released on March 8, 2016. It will be available for download from iTunes and other podcasting services as well as a Libsyn RSS feed.

The Night Vale Presents platform is intending to introduce more podcasts in the coming year. Right now, there isn’t any specific information about them. In addition, Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor are writing a sequel to their “Welcome to Night Vale” novel.
